ASUS GeForce RTX 4080 Noctua Edition debut, a large heat sink to reduce temperatures and noise
Good things come in threes and after the collaboration started with the GeForce RTX 3070 and 3080 models, ASUS and Noctua are back on the scene with the ASUS GeForce RTX 4080 Noctua Edition. The operation is always the same: ASUS has co-engineered together with the Austrian cooling specialist an ad hoc and more bodied heatsink for the powerful video card of the latest generation. All at a price of around 1699 euros, even if in Italy it can be found at a good 1849 euros at the moment.
The comparison is still the same as in the past, the one with the TUF Gaming version of the GeForce RTX 4080. Compared to the TUF Gaming, the Noctua Edition is decidedly thicker: we are talking about 87.5 mm and 4.3 occupied slots versus 72.6 mm and 3.65 slots.
"Going from three slim 110mm fans to two 120mm Noctua NF-A12x25 PWM fans and a fancier, bespoke vapor chamber heatsink and five rather than two 8mm diameter heatpipes, the temperatures and noise of the TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4080 can be significantly improved with the Noctua Edition, making it the quietest card in its class," reads Noctua's website.
In addition to the five 8mm heatpipes there are also three 6mm heatpipes which allow for better cooling and therefore to run the larger fans at lower speeds. “The first two Noctua Edition graphics cards have been a resounding success, so we are proud to continue our partnership with ASUS,” said Roland Mossig, CEO of Noctua.
According to the two companies, at maximum speed the Noctua Edition reduces noise by 14.9 dB(A) compared to TUF Gaming. At medium speed (70% PWM), the Noctua Edition is 16.8 dB(A) quieter while running slightly hotter (0.8°C). The picture with the fans at low speeds (typical values with an ambient temperature of 23°C) is similar, with almost identical temperatures and a reduction in noise levels of 4.8 dB(A).
"In summary, the Noctua Edition offers lower noise levels across the spectrum, with the most noticeable improvement being ~15-17 dB(A) at medium to full fan speed and approximately 5 dB(A) at inferior,” explains Noctua.
Like previous Noctua Editions, the GeForce RTX 4080 model is equipped with two BIOSes that allow you to switch between a performance profile to keep the GPU on lower temperatures and a silent profile that guarantees slightly higher temperatures in order to maintain greater silence. As for frequencies, the OC model operates at the same clocks as the TUF Gaming OC, so there's no news worthy of note on that front.
